Disney In Dimensions...

Walt Disney Pictures gave its presentation today at ShoWest...

Big on 3D. BIG. The Mouse has fully committed to astounding and assaulting your eye sockets over the next few years with seventeen films coming out in 3D between now and 2012.

I wasn't there, but I've heard back from people that were and you can get more detailed responses to the footage at Latino Review and Ain't It Cool News if you want to go into the minutia of it.

From what everyone is telling me, the "Beauty and the Beast" test that they showed really knocked the audience off it's socks. Now, if they could just get past having to wear those glasses... I hate wearing those glasses.

There was info about "TRON," but no new trailer... probably going to have to wait for Nerdvana(read: Comic-Con) for that.

The production artwork for both "A Christmas Carol" and "Alice in Wonderland" is said to be amazing and darker than what we're used to from Disney. There was a still from "Toy Story 3" that has a very sardonic feel about it. Wood from behind, looking around Andy's room with posters and pictures that a teenage boy would have. A boy that wouldn't be playing with cowboy dolls anymore... Interesting.

And several other announcements related to upcoming releases. Click on the links above for more info.

I think the films coming out this year are interesting, but starting late next year through 2012 we're going to get some truly radical and very cool Disney films, both animated and live-action.

Progressing...

East Gets Dream, West Gets Wonder...

It looks like Los Angeles won out over San Diego...

The Disney Cruise Line announced today that the Port of Los Angeles will be the new home of the Disney Wonder starting in 2011(they've signed a two-year agreement with a three-year extension option). That happens to be the year that the Disney Dream comes online. You can expect that if the Wonder is on the West Coast then the Dream will wind up filling the void on the East Coast.

So if you're wanting a Disney cruise without having to go to Florida then you've got two years to save those pennies. If you want to experience the new ships it looks like your going to have to sail the Atlantic(at least till 2014). Although when the Disney Fantasy makes her maiden voyage in 2012; her base will be in Florida, we don't know yet if the Magic will come out west or be used for extensive cruises based in Europe.

The Mouse's cruise line will have doubled its ships a little after operating a little more than a decade. Not as many as were expected when the line was first proposed to Eisner, but still impressive non-the-less. If it expands beyond the four ships it has now, it'll probably take another decade and a lot harder search for names. After Magic, Wonder, Dream and Fantasy what is there left?

A Dream Weekend...

DreamWorks Animation cleaned up at the box office this weekend...

"Monsters Vs. Aliens" ended Sunday with a monstrous take of $58.2 million dollars. Katzenberg's little firm has been delivering quite a bit of a challenge to the Mouse and Lamp with its stream of hits over the last couple of years. Granted, the quality of stories haven't been as high as Pixars, but the box office has more than equaled Emeryville.

I saw MvA over the weekend and fully enjoyed it. While the story was good, it ain't "Kung Fu Panda," but was a fun escapist night at the movies. Those of you that are fans of old sci-fi 50's films or cheesy monster films of that era should really enjoy it. But as it stands for me, Panda is still the only Pixar-quality film they've produced. From what I hear the sequel is working out very good, story-wise.

Here's hoping that future films like "Master Mind" and "Truckers" build on the base that DW has constructed over the last few years...

Nick Cage To Star In Matrix 4...

There you have one of the pictures of what Nicholas Cage looks like as the Sorcerer in Disney's live-action take on the Fantasia segment...

What the?

Man, this had better be one heck of a script is all I'm saying...

The "T" Word...

Every studio wants franchises...

Franchise are a guarantee of revenue over a period of time and nothing pleases Suits and stockholders better than the ability to know you'll have a reliable source of profits. Although nothing is certain in this world, franchises are perhaps the closest thing to a sure thing in Hollywood.

Disney likes them too, but lately, the Mouse is being more specific on what it wants from franchises. It wants a trilogy. This gives them a franchise with a beginning and and an end in sight when it comes to focusing on the cost of these creations. And even though they are magnets for money, they also cost a lot of money. Now if the trilogy is a success then they'll do more(Pirates 4 anyone?), but these projects are big enough that three are more than enough to keep the film, marketing and merchandise departments busy for the better part of a decade.

The new remake/prequel/revision of 20K is being positioned as such. Don't imagine that this first project that McG wants to do as being a one shot thing. Should it be successful the company has plans to move forward with a trilogy. A second film has already been discussed and story ideas are already in play. This isn't the only project that Iger, Cook and Aviv are intent on exploiting with this strategy. The film division is working to create many projects over the next years that will be "Tent Pole" events that can function as a trilogy should the box office gods shine upon them. Iger has been heard talking about projects that can be spread across the many divisions of the Walt Disney Company. Having two, three or even four properties that can be used as trilogies will be very profitable and very key to the corporate strategy of Disney over the next decade. So when you see Walt Disney Pictures filled with characters and stories that you love and want to see again, you may get your wish.

Again and again and again...

Aliens Land Today, Monster Box Office, Kung Fu Quality?

DreamWorks Animation releases "Monsters Vs. Aliens" in theaters today and the big question isn't if the film will make a boat load of cash...

It will. The real question is if Jeffrey Katzenberg's company can replicate the awesomeness that was "Kung Fu Panda" and make it two in a row? DW has a long list of projects lined up on the production run way and many are wondering will MVA be a harginger of what's to come or will it fall back into the "Bee Movie" and tiring "Shrek" territory.

After today we may have the answer...

More Sea Tales...

It appears someone over at Cinefools is saying a source close to them confirmed that McG's prequel to "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" will be filming in Oz near the end of this year...

They also mention that the project could be on the fast track should Will Smith sign on soon. In that case, I hope production gets delayed... PLEASE. I will soooo be upset if the Fresh Prince signs on to play a young Nemo. My choice if you want someone to play a young Captain of the Nautilus is to get a bankable star that is either Indian or could look Indian. Smith is neither. My vote would go for someone like Eric Bana. I've seen several other actors which could look the part, but lack the "manly" factor that someone like Bana could bring to the role of the brooding and brilliant sea captain/rouge. As time goes by Disney is going to be pressed with signing a lead, I just hope they don't go for Big Willie.

I Wanna See This Even More...

The trailer for Spike Jonze's "Where the Wild Things Are" is out...

Wow. What a thing of beauty. Those images placed to Arcade Fire's "Wake Up" just blend so well. I can't wait to see this in August.

I wish Disney would do a family film like this. That would be a bold and exciting move, which I don't think you'll see anything like anytime soon.

But I'd love to be proven wrong...

Battle Of The Competition...

Welcome to my childhood.

Another piece of the puzzle that was my childhood gets remade...

I remember watching this series in America as a kid when it was called "Battle of the Planets" and then "G-Force" and was happy to be able to get an original "Gatchaman DVD Set" a few years(those Alex Ross covers were icing on the cake). I look forward to it and hope they've managed to capture the fun that the original show was.

Check out Chuck the Movieguy's interview and laugh. And laugh. And laugh...

The Mouse May Have A Stoneheart...

Walt Disney Studios and ImageMovers are currently working to pick up rights to "The Stoneheart Trilogy" for Robert Zemeckis to produce according to The Hollywood Reporter...

The novels are about a twelve year old boy in London that finds an alternate world where statues have souls and come to life. The boy finding the place upsets the balance between good and evil and has to work with an orphaned girl and statue of a WW I gunner to put the world back into balance.

More MoCap madness from Zemeckis, who now seems to live in an alternate world where he doesn't have to deal with actors as much...

Pixar In Pen & Pencil & Paper..

Ahhh, the joys of charcoal, ink and tree pulp...

Even though Pixar is known as a computer animation company, the original computer animation company actually, the truth is they start out every production just like an old fashioned hand-drawn film. Everything from characters to sets all begin as a sketch that goes from pencil to pen on paper before it ever gets animated...

JoBlo Interviews Rhino...

The promotions with Rhino are starting to come out...

The JoBlo website got an interview with the little fella while he was outside his ball. Take a look and remember that it was all recorded live. This wasn't a setup...

And if you're a morning person, check out KTLA5 at 7:15 a.m. tomorrow and watch who Mark Kriski has helping him with the weather.

It'll be awesome...

Ponyo By August...

Walt Disney Pictures has announced that Hayao Miyazaki's "Ponyo" will be released on August 14th here in America...

If you want to see a film that was heavily influenced by Miyazaki then go see "Up" in May. Pete Docter, like John Lasseter, is a huge fan of his work and it shows in his and many of Pixar's films. It's great that the public gets to see these films in a much wider release than when I was a kid.

The world is opening up far wider for people today than when I was a child...

There's No "R" In Superhero...

It seems that the Suits over on the Warner Lot are laying down the law...

A mandate has gone out that no more superhero films will be rated "R" since the box office disappointment of "Watchmen" a couple weeks ago. This according to a source over at IESB. Like Suits tend to do, they never focus on story. Only the tangible demographics that they perceive to understand. So they're thinking was that the reason "The Dark Knight" did so well was because it was rated PG-13 and not the fact that it had a brilliant story? You got to love them, don't you. Those business degrees are worth so little it seems.

Now, this isn't to say that Watchmen had bad story, because I think Zach Snyder did the impossible in translating that comic and bringing the core of what it was to the screen. But it's not a typical superhero story. In fact, it's a revisionist superhero story the way that Clint Eastwood's "Unforgiven" was. And those that went in for a typical comic book story were destined to be disappointed. The Suits would probably know this if they ever bothered to read the material that they film instead of handing it off to readers that give them coverage. Jeff Robinov made a glaring admission of not knowing what the heck he was talking about when he made the statement that all comic films will now be dark and serious, including Superman(this is a paraphrase of what he said). What he and others don't understand is that you have to be true to the source. You have to make it more accessible to a wider audience that film allows, but you have to remain faithful. That doesn't mean "dark and brooding." "Iron Man" wasn't that way and it worked out fine. When they start filming "Green Lantern" in September they shouldn't film it that way(I have got to get around to reading that script, sigh.). When they take superhero films like "Fantastic Four" and turn them into dysfunctional family sitcoms instead of a really great sci-fi adventure you can tell the Suits don't know what they're doing.

The irony here is that I believe the failure of Watchmen is because of two things. One is that it was marketed more like a superhero movie; which clearly it's not. Secondly, the expectations of Warner were way out of line because of the story that it was. It's not a film that would wind up doing the kind of box office they were expecting. It's more of a niche film that could grow beyond its targeted audience with a more focused campaign. It's strange because to me, Warner has the best marketing department in the film business. The Mouse is a very close second, although they did a bad job of marketing "Bolt" last year. Strangely, they seem to have become better at marketing Pixar films that Disney films, but that is another story for another post. Perhaps not needed after "The Princess and the Frog" comes out and does bofo at theaters.

Hopefully the Suits over at Warner prove me wrong. I loved DK and look forward to many more films that are adapted with thought and care, but not focusing on balance sheets and demographics. Good stories are what we need. As John Lasseter always says: "Quality is the best business plan of all." Maybe the genius planning the next Warner adaption should take a meeting with him. Although, I don't know if he has the time. He's very busy.

That seems to come with success...

A Bonus Treasure...

If the movie isn't enough to get you to buy the DVD/Blu-Ray of "Bolt", then the "Super Rhino" short that's included should push you over the top. These sneak pics are a tease like the first one we premiered last week...

I personally believe the short is worth buying alone because Rhino is simply Awesome!

Sanctuary, Phase Two...

Pixar's campus in Emeryville is moving forward with a second phase of construction...

Steve Jobs, John Lasseter, Ed Catmull and their Suits have been working on plans for pushing out the current building for some years now. They planned ahead when they bought the plot of land years ago(Obviously the people that built DCA weren't working for them). If you want to see more of the plans submitted to the city then click over to The Pixar Blog and see all the blueprints they've gotten hold of. If you want to see just how cool the campus is already, then click over to Blue Sky's "The Sanctuary" article from last year. This phase(not the last, btw) is scheduled to be completed in 2011. There goes that year again.

Sorry, I couldn't resist...

Life Is A Ball...

If you're watching the entertainment shows in the next few days you may get a little treat...

With the impending release of "Bolt" on DVD/Blu-Ray, they're going to be interviewing a lot of the cast and you should expect a few surprises. When shows like Entertainment Tonight and Access Hollywood and the like start interviewing characters like Rhino the hamster.

Actually live.

Live? Yup. You can expect a live interview about the release of the film with Rhino the little fella with ADD talking up a storm about how awesome Bolt(film and star) is to work with. Now the way they're doing this is through WDI's Living Character Initiative. Through that advanced technology, interviewers like Mary Hart and others will be able to ask animator Mark Walton about how it was to star with the white doggie. And it'll be very believable and very cute, so watch for it.

Awesome...

Cloudy Competition...

The trailer for Sony Pictures Animation's next feature "Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs" is out...

Looks cute.

But will it be as big as "Up" and "Monsters Vs. Aliens?" That's not trying to compare them; these films have to stand on their own. It looks entertaining. I hope it is. We'll find out in September.

Until then, things will remain cloudy...

The Short On The Shorts...

When "Up" comes out in May, it'll have another one of those classic Pixar Shorts in front of it...

So the question then has to be asked: "What animated short will appear before The Princess and the Frog?"

Well, it hasn't been set in stone yet. There's still some time before it's a lock, but as of right now the one which may get the go is "The Ballad of Nessie." Now remember, I said "may" not "will," so if the plans change I don't want to start hearing you lied or you don't know what you're talking about. Things change. But I will tell you that right now the idea is to try and get "Ballad" done in time. If that doesn't happen then I don't have an idea as to what will be put in front of the "Frog". As we move closer I'll get more info and we'll try and nail down what little five minute treasure will precede Disney's return to classic, hand drawn animation.

A High Stakes Case Of Chicken For The Mouse...

I know some of you have seen this in the news...

The abrubt end of negotiation over Hong Kong Disneyland. It was to be expected as the negotiations that have dragged on haven't came to a satisfying conclusion for TeamDisney Burbank. I can understand the Hong Kong Governments frustration as the park hasn't turned out to be the success it wanted. I can understand Disney's desire to expand the park and have the city government help foot the bill. But this impasse is both Disney's fault and not its fault.

What you are seeing on display here is a high stakes game of chicken. To see who will blink first. The Hong Kong government feels(rightly so, I believe) that they put forth a great deal of money for a disappointing return and right now they don't want to invest more without a proper guarantee of results. Very little money was put down on the project by Disney under Eisner's regime, but they got a great deal. The park they built is a very beautiful theme park and the resort is nothing if not picturesque. Eisner didn't skimp on the theming when it came to China's first park, but he did skimp on the attractions. Several key attractions that would have drawn more guest through the turnstiles were left for a second phase. Pirates, Haunted Mansion and IASW would have to wait. A big mistake that the Mouse is now having to deal with. They opened Small World last year and got an immediate attendance boost that shows if you build what guest want, they come. Well duh...

Small world is a nicely themed, very needed addition to worlds smallest Disney park, but it was built because the will of the company to fork over the cash for a major attraction like POTC or HM wasn't there. Still isn't there. Not yet, anyway...

Make no mistake about my argument here. HKDL is a very nice park, but it's one that absolutely should have opened with two or three more iconic Disney E-Tickets and the company and the local government are now in a fight because of it. Will they build the much ballyhooed Second Phase that will cost over a half billion dollars? They want to, they intend to and they should. But right now, the HK officials are having a fit and expecting Disney to pony up more than Iger and company feel is feasible. I think that as disappointing as this news is, Disney is the one with the bigger cards... or card I should say.

Shanghai.

That is a card that will make government officials in Hong Kong think twice. They're trying to expand the tourist trade in their area and the Mouse plays a bigger role than they're going to admit. I think they expected Disney to just give in and fund the project themselves. As the time gets closer to an announcement of a mainland Disney theme park the government will come around. If they don't they're going to have some serious explaining to do in five or six years. As much as a bad decision it was for them to build that resort and expect a dramatic debut for the park, it'll be an even more dramatic ending were they to let the park fail. Which, I believe they aren't about to do.

Interesting times are ahead for the Mouse and the Middle Kingdom this year...

Some Suits Should Burn...

"It's a long, long process. It's so hard when people start leaking tidbits. They're very, very early on [with it] – not that it won't happen happen, it's just early."

Zac Efron regarding his involvement in the live-action "Johnny Quest" film.

Read the actual article over at Superhero Hype and cross your fingers that the current crop of Warner Bros. Suits that came up with this version/casting of the animated classic are looking for a job soon.

Real soon...

I Wanna See This...

This movie will be frickin' cool...

Here's the poster for Spike Jonze "Where the Wild Things Are" and I can't wait to see it...

Based on the classic children's book and directed by visionary director Jonze, this film has been through quite a roller coaster ride. Everything I've seen about it looks haugntingly wonderful.

I'll be there opening night...

And if you've never seen it, check out the test footage that a young John Lasseter and Glen Keane did for a proposed animated Disney version right before John got fired, then click here.

On May 29th, What Will You Celebrate?

I've been getting some comments from a few people that have seen Pixar's new release "Up" and they couldn't be anymore positive...

From the reports I'm getting it sounds like Pete Docter has knocked this one out of the park. In what could be Pixar's most funny film there are a surprisingly large amount of deep and reflective scenes that you could classify as adult. And not in a naughty way, but a sophisticated, mature, poignant kind of way.

I've had more than one report of tearing up in certain scenes. And as usual, Pixar films are known for their wonderful secondary characters and this film is full of them. I can't wait to actually see this in theaters...

Squirrel!

Super Awesome...

Here's the first still from the new Disney short "Super Rhino" that will be on the DVD/Blu-Ray of Walt Disney Animation Studios "Bolt" next week...

You Got To Have Character...

It appears that photos of the characters from "The Princess and the Frog" have made their way onto the net...

Ain't It Cool News has posted them apparently. They're legit... at least from what I've seen of it. Louie is the alligator that's being animated by Eric Goldberg. He's funny. I mean the character, but Eric also... You might want to go take a look at these before Disney legal sends them a nice e-mail. I don't know if they've allowed these to be released yet.

In a little more than two months and the production part of the film ends. Not that there won't be plenty to still do. Can't wait to see that trailer...

Buzz In Toyland...

Alain over at Disney and More has some more info about the new Toy Storyland that is being build at Walt Disney Studios in Paris for a tentative 2010 opening...

Go over and read about it and pray that the economy starts to get better, because even better things are planned than this.

But that's not a Toy Story, that's another story...

Next Week Look For A Dog...

It comes out next week in America, but it's still doing very good box office overseas...

By the time you buy your DVD or Blu-Ray copy next week the little dog will be within striking distance of the big 300 number. By the beginning of April it will have crossed that line. It would have already passed it weeks ago if Calvin Klein Vampires Models hadn't blinded Disney's marketing department...

I Know Nothing...

Apparently Michael Eisner has been seen walking around on crutches with a cast on his leg...

All I can tell you is I have an alibi. Not to mention I disposed of the tire iron and it'll never be found. Errr... scratch that. You didn't hear nuthin'. Nothing, I tell you!

Now, where did I leave that address for Paul Pressler...

New Found Money...

If only real money was this colorful...

Good News/Bad News = Princess/Toy...

Now I've got good news and bad news...

Well, it's really good news and delayed good news actually for this Friday the 13th. I've heard back from my Bothans about that "Toy Story 3" trailer I was wondering about.

Here's what seems to be the plan(again, things could change, but this is the plan).

First, there will be no Toy Story 3 trailer in May... yes, I know. A bit disappointing isn't it? But the good news is that there will be a trailer that comes with(but not attached) "Up" on May 29th. That's when the full trailer for "The Princess and the Frog" will debut. At least in theaters. The Mouse may put it up online before that, but the plan as of now it to put it in front of the Senior Citizen Action Adventure film.

See, the thinking right now is that the trailer for each new animated feature will be the trailer for for the next animated feature. WDAS and Pixar are both Disney now. Remember how the trailer for Up ran before Bolt last fall? So P and F will run before Up and should all go according to plan, when we see Disney's latest hand drawn animated feature during the holidays, you may see a trailer for Woody and Buzz.

Now that would be a really nice Christmas gift...

Monsters Vs Monsters...

Through the miracle of modern technology(ehem, YouTube) you to can now see what Tokyo gets that those of us in America don't...

Like I mentioned in my "There are Know Secrets Anymore" article last year, it's going be harder to hide the difference in quality between parks in the coming decades. Technology has freed us. We can now see what was once hidden by oceans and time. The Walt Disney Company(under old management, we should remember) took advantage of its guest when it designed mediocre attractions for the stateside parks and then build lavish ones for Tokyo. It's something that those Virtual Shareholders I mentioned would be able to bring to the public's attention. Never again will they be able to design an attraction like Superstar Limo and expect Disney Geeks not be able to compare it with what the Mouse builds in Tokyo or elsewhere. It doesn't matter that Disney doesn't pay for these attractions since the Oriental Land Company purchases it. The fact that the OLC subsidizes the technology is a benefit which gives less of an excuse as to why a lavish attraction should be built. As I've said before, the new management is more sensitive to this issue and has been much more responsive in giving the American parks these types of attractions. Granted Disneyland is benefiting from it more, but WDW will start to show signs of this policy as well. The economy is the main obstacle in Florida and that is only a temporary delay. Patience...

So there you have it, and here you have the difference in attractions:

Monsters, Inc. at DCA is here.

Monsters, Inc. at Tokyo Disneyland is here.

Pixar's New Toy Line Debuts In May?

An the Annual Shareholders Meeting Tuesday in Oakland it was revealed that the Board had taken a trip to Emeryville to see the Pixar campus...

While there they got to see a work-in-progress print of "Up" that was enjoyed very much, but the surprise cherry on top was seeing a scene from next years "Toy Story 3" that gets me wondering:

Will we see a trailer for it attached to Up?

Such has been the case for the majority of the last decade with each previous film: there's always been a nice trailer for the following one. So do we have a little more than two more months before we get our first glimpse of Woody and Buzz in a decade?

I've sent messages to several Bothans and am patiently waiting(NOT!) to hear back from them regarding this summation.

Tick, Tick, Tick, Tick, Tick...

Sight SEAing...

Over at Disney and More, Randie Soul has put up a post with some beautiful pictures from a recent visit...

Click over and drool at the staggering amount of theming and attention to detail. Then start saving those pennies for a flight over to Tokyo...

A Good Race...

I didn't know what to think about this one...

I mean, I love the originals with all their flaws and wrinkles, but I wasn't a big fan of "The Game Plan" so I was a little hesitant about this film. I feared it was going to be just a bunch of cool effects and a bad, cheesy story with a series of puns. Not that I wanted it to be, but that was my feelings as to what I'd wind up seeing this Friday.

Maybe the only thing I had to fear was... fear?

Variety and The Hollywood Reporter are out with their reviews and they actually liked the films. They liked them a lot. Even called them "real science fiction" and saying how much fun they were:

"Action and sci-fi thrills blend nicely with comedy in one of Disney's best action movies this side of Jerry Bruckheimer. So it can be done. "Race to Witch Mountain" is a film from Walt Disney Pictures that doesn't play like a family film manufactured by the Disney machine. It plays, in fact, like a sci-fi action adventure that genre fans of all ages will recognize as such."

- The Hollywood Reporter

"The movie holds up thanks to intelligent direction, solid stunts and a lively sense of fun. Who cares if it doesn't always make sense?"

- The Hollywood Reporter

"Smartly positioned for maximum potential as a breakout spring hit with cross-generational appeal, "Race to Witch Mountain" is the sort of full-throttle crowd-pleaser capable of grabbing even teen and twentysomething ticketbuyers who normally avoid anything that smacks of "family entertainment." There's something for almost every demo here -- including baby-boomers with fond memories of the original Disney-produced "Witch Mountain" pics of the 1970s -- and the entire package is impressively propelled by the star-powered, likably comic-macho perf by Dwayne Johnson (formerly known as the Rock). Expect strong B.O. numbers, even stronger homevid sales and very early talk of a possible sequel."

- Variety

This might turn out to be a fun film to see over the weekend. Imagine that...

New "View" Of Frog...

John Lasseter was on "The View" this morning so I actually watched it for a change...

And they had this great montage of all the films Pixar has done mixed in with "Bolt" and a couple clips from "The Princess and the Frog" thrown in showing the direction WDAS is headed.

Afterwards there were some short scenes from the film that I thought you'd like to see...

UPDATE: The segment featuring Lasseter talking with the ladies of "The View" is up on YouTube here. The "Princess and the Frog" scenes are at the 7:22 point in the video for those that want to skip ahead...

Partly Cool...

When I heard the premise for this new Pixar short: "Partly Cloudy" that would be appearing before Pixar Animation Studios' "Up" this summer, I wasn't that excited...

"Everyone knows that the stork delivers babies, but where do the storks get the babies from? The answer lies up in the stratosphere, where cloud people sculpt babies from clouds and bring them to life. Gus, a lonely and insecure grey cloud, is a master at creating "dangerous" babies. Crocodiles, porcupines, rams and more -- Gus's beloved creations are works of art, but more than a handful for his loyal delivery stork partner, Peck. As Gus's creations become more and more rambunctious, Peck's job gets harder and harder. How will Peck manage to handle both his hazardous cargo and his friend's fiery temperament?"

I mean, I have faith in Pixar because they're Pixar, of course! But that being said, I just thought how exciting is a cloud going to be? Or look? Well, even though it's very, Very, VERY rare... I was wrong. Once I saw the image above, I just went "Whoa, that's cool!" and had to mention it to you guys. My best wishes go out to Peter Sohn on his directorial debut with this short. He played my favorite character in "Ratatouille" and I'm rooting for him...

Frog Moves...

Not wanting to make the mistakes it made last year with "Bolt," Walt Disney Pictures has decided to bump up the release of Walt Disney Animation Studios' "The Princess and the Frog" from December 25 to December 11 in an effort to keep the competition from eating away at the profits...

Turns out that Chipmunk sequel and a couple other releases were making it look pretty crowded opening up on Christmas Day. So the wide release will now be two weeks earlier. A smart move that I think will bring in a great deal more green at the box office. The film will open in New York and Los Angeles on November 25 and build with word of mouth over the next to weeks till its general release.

Looks like Lasseter's little "talk" with the marketing department worked after all...

The Coming Dreams & Fantasies...

No, this is not that kind of reference...

Bob Iger spoke at the Annual Shareholders meeting in Oakland the other day and he did the usual thing. Being Mr. Positive he talked about how the company will ride out the current economic storm, but he also played a clip from Walt Disney Animation Studios "The Princess and the Frog" that got the audience going pretty good. He went on and announced several things, but one of them that slipped by me was about the Disney Cruise Line.

He finally announced the names and launching of the two ships. I already knew about one, but not the other. Both are glaringly obvious and yet, still make total sense when lined up with the original Disney Magic and Disney Wonder.

The Disney Dream will have her maiden voyage in 2011 and the Disney Fantasy will push out to see in 2012. Just thought it was a point of interest. You don't have to start packing just yet, but it's nice to know what you're going to be making reservations on, isn't it?

I'm curious what the differences in art styles(Art Deco and Art Nouveau) will be from the Magic and Wonder, I wonder...

"Retro"fitting...

I love architecture...

If you've followed this site often, you should know that. I've posted several articles(as well as Shrunken Ned's post) that show off the Disney resorts around the world's architectual styles. And each and every resort has has lovely themed buildings. Lovely stylized hotels. And each and every resort has lovely Disneyland Hotels...

Except this one. The original one. The first one. The Disneyland Hotel.

It's something I've harped on since the beginning... something that's been a thorn in my side. Seeing it compared with WDW(the Floridian is essentially the DLH there), Paris, Hong Kong and now Tokyo with their amazing DLH leaves Anaheim's version a little to wanting. Okay, a lot to be wanting. I've always hated the look of those buildings. The inconsistent styles, the very nature of their structure which looks like three giant concrete blocks that got stuck in the ground and unable to be moved, so they decided to build rooms inside them. Now we know that's not how they were built there, but it's almost how I imagine they've remained there.

I know not everyone agrees with me, but I've always championed the Victorian(or Mictorian for the Uber-Disney Geek) style for a new Disneyland Hotel. Not exactly like the others, but in that style. I personally find it a very warm, inviting style that represents the calming influence of Walt's childhood... a place where you can go to bed and forget about the outside world. That said, I've also wanted the hotel built in a different location. Right where the Pick up Bus/Taxi area is. That would be a great visual icon for those driving down Harbor Blvd. as they go past the resort. It would also be a fantastic way to enter the resort. Imagine walking under such a structure and entering the Esplanade with DCA on your left and Disneyland on your right with Downtown Disney directly ahead. In my opinion, quite striking...

But neither of those ideas are being done.

At least not under the current plan which could see the light of day by the end of the year. Remember that is "could" because the plans have changed so often. But the plan that I'm sure some of you have heard about has them gutting the existing three towers with plans for an extensive remodel that reflects the 50's retro look of the original Disneyland Hotel... the one Jack Wrather built back in the fifties, not the skyscrapers we currently see. It may not be my favorite plan, but I can understand the nostalgic feel of recreating a 50's style building. Setting the design around the a look that Walt would/could have seen during the parks opening is a nice touch. If they're able to pull it off. I haven't seen the plans, but I've had them described to me and it could turn out to be a very nice refurbishing, although a time consuming one. From what I've heard, should the details be worked out the construction could begin as soon as the end of this year. Personally, I think that's a little optimistic and don't expect to see any kind of serious work going on till at least this time next year... but we'll see.

The Disneyland Hotel has gone through several proposals over the past twenty years. When Eisner and the Suits got hold of the property, it was considered for a while that it should be demolished and rebuilt anew(yet another mistake by Eisner). Then when the WestCOT project was proposed, the idea was to refurbish all the towers and build a new fourth tower. When that project was abandoned the version we got now was proposed and put into place. A version that modernised somethings and added a new paint job on the outside. Marvelous...

All the time the tower was getting older and looking noticeably uglier. There was a proposal made to redo the towers a couple years ago, to essentially take each tower down one by one and retheme them. But this wasn't a retro retheming... this was a more, shall we say, fantasy type of retheming that would be more in the style of the actual park itself. One of more whimsy you could say. Well, as time goes by the plans for that one changed as well and we are now in an advanced stage where the look will now be retro. Back to the future, as perceived by the past. Of course, it'll have better plumbing and HDTV which those guest back in the 50's could only dream about. Here's hoping that when it's announced that the Imagineers will have been able to pass through the mess that the Suits tend to cause. Which should be easier now that there are less of them. It also helps when they show plans to Lasseter and if he's given it his blessing then I have more hope for the project. So now, instead of me having pictures in my head of a Victorian/Steampunk Disneyland Hotel with dirigibles floating above it, I'll have to imagine a retro-50's Disneyland Hotel with families swooping around in jet packs. I'd like me a jet pack, that'd be sweeeeeet.

Time will tell...

Casting Force...

And continuing our Star Wars news...

We haven't heard much about it lately, but George Lucas was supposed to do a live-action "Star Wars" television series in addition to the animated one. Nothing has been heard for a while now. Hopefully he won't create anymore endearing characters like Padawan Ahsoka Tano for this.

Now comes word from MTV's Movie Blog that they've started casting. I just hope that Master Lucas stays out of the day to day details with his trying to put "Red Tails" together, his experimental films, ect. and has quality people that "get" the Star Wars universe around the project. May the Force be with them.

Because they're going to need it...

On The Tenth You'll Know 23...

Don't forget tomorrow is the big reveal of Disney 23...

I've known about this for a couple months now, but I promised my Bothan that I wouldn't reveal it. Now even though some websites have revealed some of what will be happening, not all of what 23 is has come out.

So tomorrow after 1:00 pm when Steven Clark(a D23 Suit), Dave Smith(All-knowing Disneyologist) and Marty Sklar(WDI's roving ambassador) do their press event keep checking the official website and enjoy.

Also remember to watch "The View" on Wednesday(I can't believe I just said that) when Bob Iger will be there with a few surprises, Whoopi Goldberg will guide you on a tour inside the Walt Disney warehouse and John Lasseter will be previewing "Up" on the show. All this, right before Barbara Walters and Bob Iger have a Disney Legends ceremony.

Fun times...

Listening In On A Genius Now Gone Mad...

Want to see the inner workings of how "Raiders of the Lost Ark" got made?

Then go here to download the 125 page transcript of the story conference between George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and Lawrence Kasdan. Very cool, very interesting stuff.

A wonderful time when the man could do no wrong and hadn't started on the destructive path which tarnished his image.

No, I'm not talking about Eisner...

A TOUGH CarouSELL...

Now this really isn't a Blue Sky Buzz report, so much as it's just a reminder of what's happening tomorrow...

Kind of like when you were reminded to change your clocks forward today. You did change your clocks, didn't you?

Hopefully you rode King Triton's Carousel lately, because it goes down tomorrow for a couple months of refurb. Are they going to be putting that beautiful cover that you saw on display at the Blue Sky Cellar?

No, they're not.

It is getting a makeover, but that elaborate roof that was originally planned has been put aside for now. WDI and the Suits have decided that the money they were going to allocate to this project will be put to better use going in attractions. Now, as much as I want to see that beautiful roof over KTC , I'd rather see it put into making an attraction better and more detailed in theming. Also, this doesn't mean it isn't getting anything. There will be a new canopy put atop that will blend in with Midway Mania far better, some new technical electronics for safety concerns and the area is supposed to be repainted to match the look of the new boardwalk area as well.

I would have really wanted to see the new roof Imagineers proposed going up, but it's not the end. The people inside of the project and the Makeover would still like to see it as well. Which is why we might see it in the next phase of the resort project if this one goes well. So don't think of it as not being built, but postponed till a few years later. This isn't uncommon, as many projects for the original park either didn't get build initially or something else eventually replaced it.

So the Carousel is getting "plussed" like the rest of the pier, it's just not getting as much as we would have liked. Thankfully, it's not for cutting corners though. It's so that those attractions being built don't get cut like they did in the 90's under "He who should not be named." It's nice that the new attractions aren't being stripped of what makes you want to build them in the first place.

And that's a good thing...

New Senior Citizen Action Adventure Trailer...

Y'know, the more I see of this film, the more I'm loving it...

Pixar has released a new trailer for "Up" which floats into theaters in May. Watch this and tell me it's not funny, clever, engaging and totally Pixar.

I dare you...

$elling Bolt$...

With Walt Disney Animation Studios' "Bolt" only days away from it's DVD/Blu-Ray release I remembered going to see it once again...

I remember stopping by The Disney Store to see what merchandise they had for it and finding very little, but also hearing that many of the plush, stuffed figures they had were constantly sold out. I went to another store and found the same problem. While Bolt merchandise didn't light marketing on fire, it did do surprisingly well, even though I didn't see much of it.

So in light of the new formats being released this month and the approaching $300 million dollar figure at the box office, I figured I'd see some of what Disney Consumer Products had made for the dog that I hadn't seen...

The Final Frontier For The First Time...

Man, there are a lot of trailers being released right now...

Hey, I'm a doctor Jim! Not a comedian...

Hogwarts & All...

A new trailer is out for "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" and boy is that Voldermurk, uhm Volgermuck, ehem Voodlediddy... errr the bad guy is really mad...

Take a look at what "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" could look like, but won't.

Enjoy...

Monsters Clipped...

Speaking of DreamWorks new film...

Coming Soon has a new clip from "Monsters Vs. Aliens" up for all to see. Give it a look...

What I Really Want To Do Is Write...

Some people don't know when enough is enough...

Joseph Kosinski(Tron 2), who is in charge of one of the most awaited films of the next couple years. A man who a year ago you could have mentioned to me and I would have said: "who?" has a side job apparently. I guess Disney isn't paying him as much as I thought.

The director of the Tron sequel wants to be a writer and not surprisinly, people are listening. Kosinski will be coming out with an illustrated novel called "Oblivion" from Radical Books in 2010. This should be just when he's deep, deep in post on the Disney picture. I wonder where he finds the time...

Perhaps next a video game...

Blue Sky Mini-Review: Monsters Vs. Aliens...

Ahhh, my Bothan Spies are everywhere...

One of them, a friend that goes by the name Urban Myth was lucky enough to a see a screening of "Monster vs Aliens" last week and sent in this mini-review...

"For some reason I wasn't expecting much from Monsters vs. Aliens (MVA.) I'm not a super huge comic or Sci-Fi fan, and I've definitely had my fill of Dreamworks films relying on pop culture references. But I have to say I was pleasantly surprised and it's a really fun movie- especially in 3D. The movie focuses more on the character Susan (aka Ginormica) than I thought. And there was (without giving anything away) a really nice arc to her character that was unexpected.
The humor comes from every angle in the film. As you can guess from the trailer the Monster crew are absolutely hilarious with out relying on your garden variety pop humor this time. Just hearing BOB's laughs made me laugh. Even the villain Gallaxhar gets in on the comedic action... But I will say there are a hand full of scenes with the President (Steve Colbert) that were the absolute funniest bits in the whole film. Talk about quirky and out of left field.

The only thing that really bugged me was that all the humans, their vehicles and aircraft etc all looked very toy like in comparison to the really fleshly and organic looking monsters. That little disconnect was the only thing that felt odd to me. But I'm guessing it kind of all goes with the comic roots and that the fans will appreciate more than I.
There is a lofty setup for a sequel at the end of the movie, so if this one comes out strong later this month I'm sure you are going to see more MVA in the future. But it really is worth seeing and I didn't expect to say that going in.
"Gallaxhar out!"
Well, there you have your first look at what could be DreamWorks next animated hit. This isn't the only positive report I've gotten about the movie. I've had multiple comments about how much fun this film was. It looks like Jeffrey Katzenberg has another winner on his hands.

We'll know for sure when the aliens land on March 27th...

Wolverine Trailer No Mouse...

The new trailer for "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" is up
thanks to to USA Today...

But you might want to put on your reading glasses because it's really small. Here's to hoping the film is great. I think Hugh Jackman is a great actor so long as he's not teamed up with Stephen Sommers...

Sheesh, I hate all the prefaces before the title. Why can't it just be Wolverine? Does anyone not living under a rock NOT know that he was part of the X-Men. I'm gonna hate Captain America if they really do have that "The First Avenger" before it. Can you imagine if they had done Batman or Superman the same way with "The First Justice Leaguer?" Suits... sometimes you just wanna beat some sense into their brains and then you realize: "Oh wait, they don't have brains!"

I read the original draft of Wolverine, but it's clear from the trailer that it's been rewritten. I like the version I read a lot. It was very good. One of the few things I didn't like was the bone claws, which come from an issue of the comics... one that I don't agree with for sure. The claws in most of the Wolvie canon are mechanical and added when he gets his bones were coated with adamantium. It just makes a more logical argument for me, but that's me.

You can wake up now, I'm through being geeky...

Punks Are Doing the Score...

The website Upcoming Film Scores is reporting that Daft Punk is recording the score for "Tron 2" and has gotten confirmation of this apparently...

This will be their first film score. Interesting move. Things are coming into play. People are starting to fit in the missing pieces of the puzzle. The story is being revealed to us, page by page... or maybe that should be webpage by webpage? This film has gone from almost zero to white hot in a little more than half a year.

Johnny With His Tommy...

Yup, I knew it would be out soon...

I figured by tomorrow night on the web, but they've released it already in awesome, mind-numbing Quicktime... Don't you just love Apple's trailer site? I do.

Get 'Em While They're Hot, Or Not...

Well since my "Without Tights" post last month, there seems to have been a lot of movement on comic book properties...

Granted, some of these were already optioned, but they seem to be getting renewed focus of late. As Febreary's Variety mentioned about "Youngblood" being turned into a film by Brett Ratner. Uhm, that's not exactly what I meant, but I guess it's moving forward. Ratner has made a whole lotta ehh and adequate stuff over the last few years. I hope he knocks it out of the park on this one...

"The Bozz Chronicles" were in development in the earlier part of the decade and have languished of late. I hope that Disney notices this property and the fact they have Zemeckis in the House, he was developing it before... perhaps, again?

And then there's "The Umbrella Academy" that has been in development over at Atomic Fox for a time now. Actually, someone over at AF really likes comics because three or four of the titles I mentioned are optioned by them alone. In fact, so many of the comics I mentioned have been optioned that there aren't that many of them the Mouse could option! So maybe it's time I came up with another list? Probably... I'll have a part-two up by next week. But Disney better pay more attention when I do.

Because Hollywood is grabbing onto these properties almost as soon as the first issue hits. Comic books are the new "it" thing. Until one crashes and then they'll move on like a one night stand, but I have a feeling it may take a while(I say three or four years which is an eternity in Hollywood years). As long as films like the "The Dark Knight" are making a billion dollars, even Suits will have a little patience. I know Kingdom Comics was supposed to fill part of this idea void(the first title isn't to be revealed till Comic-Con this summer), but there are several great comic books still out there and a few that aren't yet published.

But they're going fast...

Ztudios Behind ZillionTV...

The Hollywood studios and the networks are getting behind something new...

Everything moves so quick in life, sometimes when a technology finally achieves critical mass it suddenly becomes obsolete. Enter ZillionTV, a new company and technology that's being supported and partially funded by the entertainment industry. It's going to be a way for them to stream content directly to the consumer, avoiding broadcast TV and have an exciting feature like commercials? Wait, commercials that can't be forwarded through? Yes, I know what you're thinking.

Entertainment is a business and I understand where they're coming from... believe it or not I also follow that model which says nothing in life is free. Everything comes with a cost. But give the Hollywood Reporter article a read and then later this year, those that are experimental can give it a chance. Those that are not can keep finding those bootleg copies out there on the Web. Not that I'm promoting or advocating any of that kind of activity. Remember, nothing of value is free and nothing free is valuable. Yada, yada, yada.

A Very Keane Interview...

The Line Boil blog has posted a really great interview with animator, executive producer and would-have-been director of "Rapunzel" Glen Keane up for all to see...

One of his responses is directly along the lines of my post the other day:

"I want to explore new directions that hand-drawn animation can be moving in; directions that the computer has now made possible."

Give it a read, the man is an amazingly, talented genius...

Steamboat Willie's New Boat...

It appears that today the first of two new ships that the Mouse has ordered started construction...

The Cruise ship started on today will be delivered in 2011(there goes that year again) and the second will arrive in 2012. Now as to which will arrive on the West Coast, that's not really decided yet. DCL hasn't made a decision about having one of the new ships coming to Cali or simply bringing over the Wonder or the Magic. Still, it's great to see the line expand from two to four.

But it's a long way from the Disney Cruise Line that was envisioned back in the early 90's which had ten ships in it's fleet.

Turns out that'll take more than just Disney magic. But this boat? I have a feeling it'll be a Dream...

Sorcerous Casting...

Peter Sciretta of /film is reporting that Alfred Molina will be cast as an evil sorcerer opposite Nick Cage(Sorcerer) and Jay Baruchel(Apprentice) in Walt Disney Pictures "The Sorcerer's Apprentice." One of Disney's favorite Cast Members, Jon Turteltaub is directing the modern day take on the classic animated sequence in "Fantasia" that Disney fans have loved so much. Will it prove magical?

Time will tell...

Dangerously Competitive...

Oh boy, I can't wait to see this...

Whoa. This shows you the drawing power of Johnny Depp now at the box office. Once, he was considered a great actor with artsy taste and moderate draw for audiences. Captain Jack Sparrow changed that. He's above the title and Christian Bale is below it... wow. The trailer for it should be out very soon. By Friday at least...

Monsters Live! Sort Of...

The Tokyo Disney Resort "Monsters Inc Ride and Go Seek" attraction website has finally gone live...

Now if I could only read Japanese I'd know what in the world it was saying. It's fun to look at though. Don't forget to move your cursor around when you click open those doors.

Cool effect...

Staff Of Kings Cover Comes Out...

Well, the cover for Lucasarts' "Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings" has been released...

Now I only have one question. Wii? Wii!? WII!!? What the heck were you thinking Lucas!? Where's my PS3 version?

Sigh...

Back When We Were Young And Unborn...

They opened up a fifty year old time capsule the other day, and this was in it as well as this...

Walt Disney Productions, circa 1959. Walt was still there ruling over his growing kingdom. Disneyland was a mere four years old. They were about to release "Cinderella," production of "101 Dalmatians" was in full gear, production really hadn't begun yet on "The Jungle Book".

Life was simpler and I wasn't even born for years to come...

PerfecTR2N...

Wow. You're away from Blue Sky Headquarters for a few hours and BAAM!, something like this pops up...

The guys over at Ain't It Cool News have got a scoop from someone close to the "Tron 2" production that has given them a good deal of plot details.

Very geeky, very cool. When I read it I was very excited to see the direction they're going. It sounds like this one has a great concept and if Lasseter is involved like I hear, it'll have a great script too. Click the link to see all plot/story points unless you don't like spoilers, in which case don't...

Up Art...

With "Up" moving ever closer to release it seems that artwork is leaking out...

Both officially and not. Over at Disney's Hollywood Studios you can catch a glimpse of some of the concept art that Pete Docter used when coming up with the characters and the story.

If this artwork has you salivating then may I suggest you pre-order "The Art of Up" because it's filled with these kinds of gorgeous images from cover to cover...

A Happy Medium For Animation?

Ok, so we got word from WonderCon that Disney plans on releasing a CG film every 18 months and a hand drawn film every two and a half years...

Now I've seen where some people are making a fuss about this. Wondering why it's going to take almost twice as long to make a 2D versus a 3D film really misses a great deal of what this says about Walt Disney Animation Studios. That winds up being at least six CG films over a decade and at least 4 hand drawn over the decade. Add those up and then divide them by a decade and what do you come up with? One new Disney animated film every year. That's pretty cool. That's the way it was planned in the 90's but many of those pictures didn't live up to the critical and box office pressure of expectations that comes with the Disney name. I don't think that's gonna happen this time around... bean counters and Suits without any creativity won't be sticking their noses in on story meetings. People that love film, love story and love animation will be the driving force in these films over the next decade.

If you've looked at the reports of the "The Princess and the Frog" panel you'll also note what was said about films coming down the pipeline for Disney Animation. Marlon West talked about the backlash/stigma against animated films with CG in them(I guess like the ballroom scene in "Beauty and the Beast"). From what he says, Lasseter is fully aware of the fans getting tired of everything being computer animated. Which is why P and F will have almost no computer animation in it. It's trying to make a statement that story is king... that story matters most of all. Not paint, not pixels. STORY.

But the film after that is making a statement as well. Disney's 2010 release, "Rapunzel" is boldly professing something that is directly opposite while being entirely in line with Princess... Not all computer animation has to look like computer animation. It's going to become far more painterly I believe and I have a little premonition that you're going to notice the difference between a Disney animated film and a Pixar animated film, in a good way. John seems determined to make sure that they don't just come off as indistinguishable parts of one company, but two uniquely individual houses of story. And it will show in the films they create. The one thing they will have in common is quality.

And as the next few years pass by you're going to notice something else... many of these films, the hand drawn ones, will become hybrid films as West calls them. Ones that use computer animation, but in subtle ways that you won't be able to notice. And then there will be the subterfuge film. This will be the film made by WDAS that everyone loves and no one can understand how it's made. Because it's going to look like a hand drawn film, but it's going to be a totally computer generated film. Parts of it can happen now. Just look at "Bolt" with some of the backgrounds. Parts of will happen next year. The style of animation that "Rapunzel" has is going blow people's minds, trust me. And then, in the coming years some of the films that your going to see are going to surprise you. Because as much as many of us want to get back to films like those in Disney's Second Golden Age, this one's gonna be different. As much as I think the stories are going to be better, I also think the animation gurus in the Hat Building are planning on stunning us with what they're going to be able to achieve. Parts of this is just my hunch and parts of it are whispers that I'm hearing... put it together and this is the inevitable conclusion I come to.

I can't wait for it all to unfold in beautiful layers of both brush and pen...

Dastardly And Muttley In That Wacky Hollywood...

Why do we need another "Total Recall" (yes, I know the story was different and it required more of a Richard Dreyfuss type charcter but it was an okay movie for the time)? Why do we need another “Romancing the Stone”(Indy rip off, but I'll take it over KOTCS)? Why do we need another “Neverending Story” (not that any of these are "Citizen Kane", but c'mon!)? When will the story freaking end?!?! I thought remakes were for movies that DIDN’T WORK. They were for movies that had a great kernel of an idea but never quite came to fruition. In a year where we have some great cinematic achievements from “The Dark Knight" (yes it’s BATMAN, but oh what an original telling of the caped crusader it was)” to “Slumdog Millionaire”, why does Hollywood have to just regurgitate the same old stories in a new packaged form? The simple answer is that they are bankrupt of ideas.

But maybe that isn’t THAT simple. Maybe they have great ideas, but are afraid of getting behind them and rolling the dice. I get it, the economy is horrible, who wants to take a chance? But this has been going on LONG before our economic melt down, so that is just an excuse. Hollywood has been doing this forever. In the 80’s with the birth of video, you used to be able to make a poster, a one line pitch and get funding for your movie. In the 90’s you had a poster, a one line pitch and when you got the money you put a down on a house (kinda déjà vu) so GOODBYE PRE-SALES. But now, if you don’t have the poster, a one line pitch, the first 30 minutes of the film shot and a letter saying that Tom Cruise is signed (not attached), forget it. The 70’s brought us masterpieces in film, why? Because the artists were left alone to create (although having a limited budget helped them – a big shout out to George L and Steven S if you’re listenin’).

The money people (suits) left the creative to the creative and only got involved when they could throw their weight behind a project for it to be a positive effect not a negative one (and that meant staying out of the creative soup). Now, with Hollywood churning out more comic book and video game movies (yes, I know they have a fan base – automatic $$$$ - but if you could just stop the pop cultural referencing Kevin Smith), that allegiance is gone. And what we have left is people who grew up in the 80’s running studios, calling the shots and by darn it if they loved “Dastardly, Muttley and the Wacky Races” growing up, well then that would be a swell movie idea – hot damn, let’s put it in development, no….better yet, let’s start shooting the f***er!

I hope that after Danny Boyle settles down from all the oscar hype, he like many artists take a stand (I am talking to you Darren A). Now he has the cache to do so, PLEASE for the love of God, don’t “go Hollywood”, stick to your guns and create original stories like “Sunshine" (2001 rip off)”, “Trainspotting (gotta love a post modern "Clockwork Orange"” and “Slumdog” (a conventional love story, but the technique in which it was done was unique, you gotta give it that – and the music! Wow, what an oscar night, unless you are Peter Gabriel). And maybe if Danny Boyle doesn’t get his phone ringing by then, he could always do a “Trainspotting” sequel called “Porno”……no? Okay well what about a sequel to “A Life Less Ordinary” perhaps? Too on the nose? Well what about if all else fails “Sunshine II – The Return?” Oh, they all died in the end, I remember now…well maybe a live action Dastardly and Muttley wouldn’t be such a bad idea after all…no? Well maybe if it had Tom Cruise attached…
